The Story:

The earliest Pakistani community in the United States was established in the city of New York. Specifically, the neighborhood of Jackson Heights in the borough of Queens became one of the first centers for the Pakistani-American community. Also adopted by South Asians from India and Bangladesh, the earliest wave of Pakistani immigrants arrived in the 1950s and 1960s, making Jackson Heights a hub where they could find familiar cultural resources, establish businesses, get affordable housing, and build social networks with a supportive environment.

Most of the early Pakistani immigrants to New York were professionals and students pursuing higher education in fields such as engineering, medicine, and business. They saw the United States, and specifically New York, as a place where they could gain valuable knowledge and experience at a country that promised freedoms and a better life for their families.

Despite challenges, the early Pakistanis, like other immigrants alike, paved the way for future generations of Pakistani immigrants, shaping the history and growth of the Pakistani-American community in New York.
